Onimusha Story & Characters Guide — Miyamoto Musashi, the Genma, and Edo Kyoto
A deep dive into Onimusha: Way of the Sword's story, characters, and lore — from the historical Miyamoto Musashi to the reimagined Genma mythology of Edo-period Kyoto.
Onimusha Story & Characters Guide
Onimusha: Way of the Sword weaves historical figures, Japanese mythology, and dark fantasy into a new chapter of the series' lore. Here's what you need to know.
The Protagonist: Miyamoto Musashi
The Historical Musashi
Miyamoto Musashi (1584–1645) is Japan's most famous swordsman. His historical achievements:
- Undefeated in over 60 duels
- First duel at age 13 (against Arima Kihei — Musashi beat him to death with a wooden sword)
- Defeated the Yoshioka school of swordsmanship (single-handedly destroying an entire martial arts lineage)
- Killed Sasaki Kojiro at Ganryu Island using an improvised wooden sword carved from an oar
- Authored The Book of Five Rings (五輪書), still studied by martial artists and business strategists today
- Founded the Niten Ichi-ryū (二天一流) style of dual-wielding swordsmanship
- Bonds to Musashi's left arm (the same arm he historically used for dual-wielding)
- Grants Soul Absorption — pull souls from defeated enemies to heal, grow stronger, and charge abilities
- Enables Oni Gifts — supernatural techniques unlocked through story progression
- Allows Oni Transformation — temporarily become a demonic warrior with immense power
- Carries a corruption risk — the narrative stakes involve Musashi fighting to retain his humanity
- Hierarchy: Foot soldiers → Oni Lords → Genma Kings → Fortinbras
- Malice: The Genma's reality-warping weapon. It's both a weapon (corrupting environments and people) and a bridge (opening rifts for invasion)
- Possession vs Creation: Lower Genma are humans/animals possessed by Malice. Higher Genma are "pure" — born in the demon realm as original entities
- Ashigaru: Possessed former samurai and foot soldiers. Swarm in groups, wielding rusted katana
- Oni Brutes: Massive, club-wielding demons. Pure Genma. High posture, requires parrying to defeat
- Flying Horrors: Winged Genma scouts. Fast, dive-bomb attacks, vulnerable to the Oni Bow
- Malice-Touched: Corrupted wildlife (wolves, bears, giant serpents). Unpredictable attack patterns
- Genma Captains: Elite humanoid Genma with unique weapons and abilities. Mini-boss class
- The Oni Gauntlet is the same class of artifact wielded by Samanosuke (Onimusha 1), Jubei (Onimusha 2), and others
- Fortinbras returns from Onimusha 1, 3, and Dawn of Dreams
- The Oni transformation mechanic is a core series staple
- References to previous protagonists appear through the "Legacy of the Oni" items
- The timeline places Way of the Sword centuries after the original games (which were set in the Sengoku period)
The Onimusha Musashi
In Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Musashi is in his early 30s — at the peak of his abilities but before his most famous duels. He arrives in Kyoto seeking worthy opponents. Instead, he finds a city consumed by Malice.
His acquisition of the Oni Gauntlet parallels the classic Onimusha premise: a human warrior bonds with an Oni artifact to fight demons, risking his own humanity in the process. Unlike previous protagonists who were samurai serving lords, Musashi is a ronin (masterless samurai) — his only loyalty is to his own code.
The Oni Gauntlet
The Oni Gauntlet is the series' signature artifact. In every Onimusha game, the protagonist bonds with an Oni artifact that grants demonic power at a cost — the more you use it, the closer you come to becoming a demon yourself.
In Way of the Sword, the Gauntlet:
Key Characters
Allies
Kenshin — A mysterious blind monk who serves as Musashi's guide. He can "see" the Malice and understands the Genma threat better than anyone. His dark humor masks deep knowledge of the Oni Gauntlet's true nature. May be connected to previous Onimusha games' lore.
Lady Oichi — A noblewoman of the decaying imperial court. She provides Musashi with political cover and access to restricted areas of Kyoto. Her family was destroyed by the Genma — she has her own reasons for aiding the fight. Sharp-tongued, pragmatic, and possibly hiding her own supernatural connection.
Muramasa — The legendary swordsmith appears as a recurring character (a series tradition). He maintains and upgrades Musashi's weapons at the dojo hub. In this game, he's presented as elderly but spry, with a sardonic wit and a deep distrust of the Oni Gauntlet.
Antagonists
Sasaki Kojiro — Musashi's destined rival. Corrupted by Malice but not fully a villain — the game positions him as a dark mirror to Musashi. He accepted demonic power willingly (unlike Musashi, who had it forced upon him). Multiple duels across the story, with the final confrontation likely at a reimagined Ganryu Island.
Shuten-dōji — The "king of oni" from Japanese mythology. In Onimusha, he's the Genma warlord ruling Mount Oe. A gigantic, multi-phase boss fight. His mythology (kidnapping and consuming humans, ultimately slain with divine sake) is woven into the game's narrative.
Dokyo — A corrupted monk serving as the story's mastermind. His name references the historical Dōkyō, a Nara-period monk who attempted to usurp the throne. In Onimusha, he's orchestrating the Kyoto Malice for his own ascension — possibly to godhood. Appears in human form through most of the game, transforming into something far worse in the final act.
Fortinbras — The God of Light and ultimate antagonist of the Onimusha series. A demonic entity of immense power who has been defeated but never truly destroyed across multiple games. His resurrection is the endgame threat. New players need no prior knowledge — the game explains his role.
The Genma
The Genma are not simply demons — they are a parallel civilization that exists in a realm adjacent to the human world. Their goal is not destruction but conquest: the complete subjugation of humanity under Genma rule.

Genma Types in Way of the Sword
Setting: Edo Kyoto
The game's Kyoto is a dark fantasy reimagining of the actual historical city. Key locations:
Kiyomizu-dera
The demo area. A Buddhist temple on a hillside overlooking Kyoto. In the game, it's been overrun by Malice — cherry trees rot, staircases collapse into demonic voids, and the famous wooden stage becomes a dueling arena.Mount Oe
Shuten-dōji's fortress. A volcanic mountain transformed into a Genma stronghold. Lava flows, ritual chambers, and the throne room of the Oni King. Expected to be a major late-game dungeon. The Imperial Palace
The heart of Kyoto's political power — now the heart of the Malice corruption. Dokyo's seat of operations. Expect elegant architecture twisted into nightmare geometry.Musashi's Dojo (Hub)
Your safe haven between missions. A modest dojo on Kyoto's outskirts where Muramasa sets up shop. Upgrade weapons, practice techniques, absorb souls in peace, and trigger optional character conversations.Connections to Previous Onimusha Games
Way of the Sword is designed as a new entry point — you need zero knowledge of previous games. But for veterans:
