Story & Setting

Edo-Period Kyoto

The game is set in early Edo-period Kyoto — but a Kyoto consumed by Malice, a corrupting miasma that distorts reality and opens rifts for the Genma (demonic horde). Cherry blossoms rot on the branch. Temples become elaborate death traps. The boundary between the living world and the demon realm collapses.

Miyamoto Musashi

You play as Miyamoto Musashi — Japan's most legendary swordsman, author of The Book of Five Rings, and undefeated duelist. In this timeline, his journey takes a supernatural turn when he acquires the Oni Gauntlet — a mystical artifact bonded to his left arm that grants demonic power.

The Genma Threat

The demon invasion is led by:

  • Shuten-dōji — The legendary king of oni, ruling from Mount Oe

  • Dokyo — A mysterious monk orchestrating the invasion for unknown purposes

  • Fortinbras — The resurrected "God of Light," the series' ultimate antagonist

Combat System

Capcom describes the combat as "precision swordplay with supernatural escalation." Key mechanics:

    • Two Sword Styles — One-handed (fast/agile) and Two-handed (slow/devastating). Switch mid-combo

    • Parry — Timed block that staggers enemies. Chain parries to enter the Blazing State (2x damage)

    • Deflect — Redirect attacks and projectiles along your blade

    • Issen (一闪) — The series' signature lethal counter. Frame-perfect timing, instant kill on standard enemies

    • Oni Gauntlet — Absorb souls from enemies. Unlock demonic abilities (Oni Gifts). Transform into an Oni

    • Environmental Combat — Rip up tatami as shields. Push carts into enemies. Knock foes off ledges

    Demo Impressions

The free demo (released June 3, 2026) covers the opening chapter at Kiyomizu-dera Temple (~30 minutes). Reception has been overwhelmingly positive:

      • Combat feels "heavy, impactful, and precise" (IGN)

      • The Sasaki Kojiro boss fight described as "the best sword duel in gaming" (Famitsu)

      • RE Engine delivers stunning visuals at 60fps (PS5)

      • Chinese voiceover quality praised by Chinese-language outlets

      • Some critics noted the camera can be unwieldy in tight corridors
