Demo Boss Guide: How to Beat Sasaki Kojiro
The Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo culminates in a one-on-one duel against Sasaki Kojiro at Kiyomizu-dera Temple. This fight is a skill check — it tests everything the demo teaches you about parrying, deflecting, Issen timing, and stance switching. Here's how to win.
Who Is Sasaki Kojiro?
In real history, Sasaki Kojiro was Miyamoto Musashi's most famous rival — the duel at Ganryu Island is legendary. In Onimusha, Kojiro has been corrupted by Malice, transforming him from a mere swordsman into a demonically-enhanced killing machine. His signature "Swallow Cut" (燕返し) is reimagined as a supernatural technique.
Pre-Fight Preparation
Before engaging, make sure you've:
- Absorbed souls from all demo enemies — you need a full Oni gauge
- Practiced parry timing against the ashigaru foot soldiers earlier in the demo
- Learned the Issen window — it's tighter than a normal parry but instantly ends phases
The demo auto-equips you with the one-handed style. You can switch to two-handed mid-fight, but one-handed's speed is generally better for this duel.
Phase 1 — The Swordsman (100%–70% HP)
Kojiro opens as a mostly human duelist. His attacks are telegraphed and fair.
Attack Patterns
| Attack | Wind-Up | Response | |--------|---------|----------| | Horizontal Slash | Shifts weight to back foot, blade glints | Parry — easiest window in the fight. Parry → 2-hit counter | | Thrust | Pulls blade back, leans forward | Deflect — sidestep and punish with 3 hits | | Overhead Chop | Raises sword high, 2-second wind-up | Evade — this attack has tracking. Dodge late. Free 4-hit punish | | Swallow Cut | Crouches low, blade hums with Malice energy | Deflect or Evade — do NOT try to parry. Unblockable if parried too early | | Kick Combo | Sheathes sword, steps in | Evade backward — 2 kicks into a draw-cut. Dodge all three |
Strategy
- Stay aggressive. Kojiro's posture recovers if you give him space.
- Parry the horizontal slash every time — it's his most frequent attack and the easiest parry window.
- After every successful parry: 2 quick hits, then reset. Don't get greedy.
- When he crouches for Swallow Cut: stop attacking immediately. The Malice hum is your audio cue.
Phase Transition
At ~70% HP, Kojiro staggers backward and roars. Malice energy erupts from his blade. The fight changes.Phase 2 — The Demon Blade (70%–30% HP)
Kojiro's sword is now wreathed in Malice. His attacks gain range, speed, and new properties.
New & Modified Attacks
| Attack | What Changed | Response | |--------|-------------|----------| | Malice Wave | Ranged slash projectile | Deflect it back at him for massive posture damage | | Shadow Step | Teleports behind you, attacks instantly | Evade forward immediately when he vanishes. Counter with 2 hits | | Enhanced Swallow Cut | Now hits 3 times in a fan pattern | Evade diagonally forward-left — dodges all three strikes | | Demon Rush | Dashes through you, slashes on both sides | Parry the second hit (the first is too fast). Or evade entirely | | Malice Explosion | Charges for 3 seconds, AoE burst around him | Run away — the radius is larger than it looks. Punish after it detonates |
Strategy
- Deflect the Malice Waves. This is the key to Phase 2. Each deflected wave deals massive posture damage and creates an opening.
- Shadow Step counter: The moment he vanishes, dodge FORWARD. He always appears behind you. If you dodge forward, you end up next to him with his back exposed.
- Use the Oni Gauntlet. Your Oni gauge should be full. Activate Oni Gifts — the spectral slash is particularly effective when he's recovering from a Shadow Step.
- Blazing State is your comeback mechanic. Chain 3+ successful parries to ignite your blade. Blazing State damage melts his remaining health.
Phase 3 — Desperation (30%–0% HP)
At 30%, Kojiro enters desperation mode. He's faster, more aggressive, and chains attacks unpredictably.
Behavior Changes
- Attack chains extend from 2-3 hits to 4-6 hits
- Swallow Cut can appear at any point in a chain (not just as an opener)
- He'll feint attacks — watch for the blade glint (real) vs. no glint (feint)
- Malice Explosion now triggers at the end of certain combos
Strategy
- Oni Transformation. If you've saved it, now's the time. Pop Oni form and go all-out. The transformation's hyper-armor lets you tank through his combos while dealing massive damage.
- Issen is your finisher. His desperation combos have longer recovery windows at the end. Bait a full chain, evade the last hit, and Issen him during recovery. One successful Issen can take 15%+ of his remaining HP.
- Don't panic. His aggression is intimidating but his individual hits do the same damage as Phase 1. Block, breathe, pick your moment.
No-Damage Tips
For players chasing a perfect run: 1. Phase 1 can be no-damaged consistently — learn the horizontal slash parry timing and you'll never get hit 2. Phase 2 Malice Waves are your best friends — deflecting them back is 100% safe and highly rewarding 3. Phase 3 Oni Transformation — the hyper-armor negates his unpredictability 4. The Swallow Cut audio cue (Malice hum) is your most reliable warning across all phases
Rewards
Beating Kojiro in the demo grants:
- A cutscene hinting at his role in the full game (he survives — this is a rivalry, not a kill)
- The "First Light" (首灯) charm for your full-game save file
- Bragging rights
The full game promises a rematch under different circumstances — likely multiple encounters across the story, culminating in a true duel to the death at Ganryu Island.
