Onimusha Genma Bestiary — Every Confirmed Enemy Type

A complete catalog of every Genma enemy confirmed for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, from lowly foot soldiers to the resurrected God of Light.

Standard Enemies

Ashigaru (Foot Soldiers)

| Attribute | Detail | |-----------|--------| | Threat Level | ★ Low | | HP | Low | | Posture | Low | | Speed | Medium | | First Appearance | Opening chapter (Kiyomizu-dera) |

Attack Patterns:

  • Rusty Slash: A single horizontal cut. Easily parried. Most common attack.

  • Thrust: A straight stab with medium range. Dodge sideways.

  • Overhead Chop: Slow, telegraphed overhead. The easiest Issen window in the game. Perfect for practice.

  • Grab: Reaches forward with both hands. Low damage, but leaves you vulnerable to other enemies.

Strategy:

  • Ashigaru always attack in groups of 3-6. Use one-handed style for speed.

  • Parry one, then use the stagger to reposition.

  • Their overhead chop is your Issen training dummy. Master it here.

  • Environmental kills are efficient: knock them off ledges, into each other, or into lanterns.

Soul Drop: Red (common), Blue (uncommon)

Oni Brutes

| Attribute | Detail | |-----------|--------| | Threat Level | ★★★ Medium | | HP | Medium-High | | Posture | High | | Speed | Slow | | First Appearance | Mid-demo (Kiyomizu-dera interior) |

Attack Patterns:

  • Club Slam: Overhead smash with a massive kanabo. Unblockable — must evade or parry. Massive posture damage if parried.

  • Horizontal Sweep: Wide swing covering 180 degrees. Parry or backstep.

  • Charge: Lowers shoulder and rushes forward. Sidestep. If he hits a wall, he's stunned for 4+ seconds.

  • Roar: AoE stagger. No damage but interrupts your attacks. His setup for a Club Slam.

  • Grab & Throw: High damage. Perfect evade triggers Grapple Reversal.

Strategy:

  • Switch to two-handed. You need the posture damage.

  • Bait the Charge near walls — the stun window is your main damage opportunity.

  • Parry the Club Slam. The parry window is generous (~15 frames).

  • After a successful parry, switch to two-handed for 2 heavy hits, then reset.

Soul Drop: Red (guaranteed), Yellow (common), Blue (uncommon)

Flying Horrors

| Attribute | Detail | |-----------|--------| | Threat Level | ★★ Low-Medium | | HP | Low | | Posture | Very Low | | Speed | Very High (airborne) |

Attack Patterns:

  • Dive Bomb: Swoops down in a straight line. Sidestep. Vulnerable for 2 seconds after missing.

  • Talon Swipe: Close-range melee while hovering. Parry or dodge.

  • Screech: AoE sonic attack. Staggers but deals no damage.

  • Nesting: Hangs upside-down from ceilings/temple eaves. Ambushes when you pass underneath.

Strategy:

  • Oni Bow is the hard counter. Two charged shots kill.

  • Deflect their Dive Bomb. The deflect window is generous, and it grounds them instantly.

  • Flying Horrors are annoying in groups — prioritize them.

Soul Drop: Yellow (common), Red (uncommon)

Malice-Touched Beasts

| Attribute | Detail | |-----------|--------| | Threat Level | ★★–★★★★ (varies) | | HP | Medium | | Speed | High |

Wolf Variant:

  • Lunge: Leaps at your throat. Parry or sidestep. Parried wolves are stunned for 4+ seconds.

  • Pack Howl: Summons 2-3 additional wolves. Kill the howler to stop the spawns.

  • Strategy: One-handed style. Stay mobile. Kill the pack leader first.

Serpent Variant:

  • Coil Strike: Lunges from coiled position. Quick, high damage. Dodge left.

  • Venom Spit: Ranged projectile. Deflect or dodge. Leaves a poison pool.

  • Constrict: Grab attack. Very high damage. Perfect evade is essential.

  • Strategy: Two-handed style. Wait for Coil Strike → dodge → punish. Be patient.

Both types are vulnerable to fire — lantern smashes and Blazing State attacks deal bonus damage.

Soul Drop: Red (common), Blue (wolves), Yellow (serpents)

Genma Captains (Mini-Boss)

| Attribute | Detail | |-----------|--------| | Threat Level | ★★★★ Hard | | HP | High | | Posture | High (regenerates) |

Sword Captain: Fast, aggressive. Can Issen YOU. Watch for the golden flash on their blade. Spear Captain: Long reach. Close distance aggressively — the spear is useless at point-blank. Dual-Wield Captain: Fastest enemy in the game. Parry timing over speed.
