A complete deep dive into Onimusha: Way of the Sword's combat system. Master one-handed vs two-handed styles, parry and deflect mechanics, Issen counters, the Blazing State, Oni Gauntlet abilities, and environmental combat.

Onimusha Combat System Master Guide

Onimusha: Way of the Sword builds on the series' classic "precision over button-mashing" philosophy while adding modern depth through the RE Engine. This guide breaks down every combat mechanic revealed so far.

Sword Styles: One-Handed vs Two-Handed

The core of Onimusha's combat is the stance system. You can switch between two sword styles at any time, including mid-combo.

One-Handed Style

| Attribute | Rating | |-----------|--------| | Speed | ★★★★★ | | Damage | ★★★ | | Mobility | ★★★★★ | | Crowd Control | ★★★★ | | Parry Window | Wider (easier) |

Best for:

  • Fighting multiple enemies (fast attacks prevent being surrounded)

  • Aggressive playstyles

  • Building the Blazing State quickly (more hits = more parry opportunities)

  • Hit-and-run tactics against faster bosses

One-Handed Combos:

  • Quick Slash (4 hits): Light → Light → Light → Light. Your bread and butter. Safe, fast, reliable.

  • Step Strike: Dodge → Light. A dashing thrust that closes distance and interrupts enemy attacks.

  • Rising Cut: Light → Light → Heavy. Launches lighter enemies for an air juggle follow-up.

Two-Handed Style

| Attribute | Rating | |-----------|--------| | Speed | ★★ | | Damage | ★★★★★ | | Mobility | ★★ | | Armor Break | ★★★★★ | | Parry Window | Narrower (harder) |

Best for:

  • Dueling single tough enemies (bosses, Oni Brutes)

  • Breaking enemy posture/armor

  • Trading hits when you have health to spare

  • Finishing staggered enemies with maximum damage

Two-Handed Combos:

  • Heavy Cleave (3 hits): Heavy → Heavy → Heavy. Slow but devastating. Each hit staggers most enemies.

  • Guard Breaker: Light → Heavy (charged). Hold the heavy input to charge. Breaks through enemy blocks.

  • Demon Splitter: Dodge → Heavy. A leaping overhead slam. High risk, highest single-hit damage.

Style Switching

The true skill ceiling is mid-combo switching: 1. Open with one-handed to close distance and land 2-3 quick hits 2. Switch to two-handed during the stagger for a massive finisher 3. Switch back to one-handed as enemies recover

The switch itself has a brief animation — don't switch while an attack is incoming.

Defensive Mechanics

Defense in Onimusha isn't passive. You're rewarded for precision timing at every level.

Parry (L1 / LB — Timed)

A precision block triggered by pressing guard just before an attack lands.

What parry does:

  • Staggers the attacker briefly

  • Deals significant posture damage

  • Creates an opening for 2-3 free hits

  • Builds toward the Blazing State

  • Parried enemies can be knocked into walls or other enemies for BONUS posture damage

Parry windows by enemy type: | Enemy | Window | Difficulty | |-------|--------|------------| | Ashigaru (foot soldiers) | ~20 frames | Easy | | Oni Brutes | ~12 frames | Medium | | Bosses | ~8-15 frames | Hard (varies by attack) |

Tip: The audio cue is more reliable than the visual. Every parriable attack has a distinct sound just before impact.

Deflect (L1 + Direction — Timed)

A directional parry that redirects attacks along your blade.

What deflect does:

  • Deflects projectiles back at ranged enemies

  • Redirects physical attacks to create longer stagger windows

  • Essential counter for Malice Wave attacks

  • The only safe response to certain boss attacks

Deflect vs Parry — when to use which:

  • Enemy attacking head-on → Parry (faster recovery)

  • Enemy using ranged/projectile → Deflect (sends it back)

  • Enemy using a multi-hit combo → Parry first hit, Deflect the follow-up to create a bigger opening

Issen (一闪) — The Signature Counter

Issen is Onimusha's most iconic mechanic. It's a lethal counter triggered by attacking at the exact moment an enemy's attack connects — or, in Way of the Sword, during specific post-parry windows.

How to Issen: 1. Parry an enemy attack 2. During the stagger, a brief golden flash appears on your character 3. Press Attack during the flash 4. You execute an unblockable, high-damage Issen strike

Issen properties:

  • Instant kill on all standard enemies

  • Massive damage on bosses (10-20% of HP bar)

  • Fully invincible during the animation

  • Generates bonus souls

  • The timing window is approximately 6-8 frames — difficult but learnable

Issen practice tip: Start with the ashigaru foot soldiers. Their overhead chop has the easiest Issen window in the game. Master it there before attempting on bosses.

Evade (X / A)

A dodge with invincibility frames at the start.

Perfect Evade: Dodging at the last moment (just before the attack connects) triggers a brief slowdown effect, indicating you've earned a counter window. Perfect-evading a grab attack triggers a Grapple Reversal — an automatic counter-throw that deals heavy damage.

The Blazing State

Chain 3 or more successful parries (without taking a hit in between) to enter the Blazing State.

While Blazing:

  • Your blade ignites with blue-white fire

  • All damage is multiplied by 1.5x–2x (scales with combo count)

  • Attacks generate extra blue souls for healing

  • Your posture becomes unbreakable

  • The effect lasts ~12 seconds or until you take damage

Blazing State strategy:

  • This is your comeback mechanic. When you're low on health, play defensively, chain parries, and Blaze to heal through aggression.

  • Blazing State + Oni Transformation simultaneously is your maximum damage window. Save it for boss final phases.

Oni Gauntlet & Soul Absorption

The Oni Gauntlet (鬼の笼手) is your supernatural toolkit. It's bound to Musashi's left arm and grows stronger as you progress.

Soul Absorption

Defeated enemies release souls:

  • Red Souls: Currency (used for upgrades at the dojo)

  • Blue Souls: Health recovery

  • Yellow Souls: Oni Gauge charge (for special abilities)

Hold the absorb button to pull all nearby souls toward you. Absorbing during combat is risky (you're vulnerable) but essential.

Oni Gifts (Unlockable Abilities)

| Gift | Cost | Effect | |------|------|--------| | Spectral Slash | 1 bar | A wide energy wave that hits all enemies in front of you | | Demonic Barrier | 1 bar | A temporary shield that absorbs one hit, then explodes | | Chain Pull | 0.5 bar | Pulls a distant enemy toward you for a free combo | | Soul Vortex | 0.5 bar | Instantly absorb all souls in a large radius | | Oni Step | 0.5 bar | A teleport-dodge with extended invincibility |

Oni Transformation

Fill the Oni Gauge completely (through yellow soul absorption or combat) to transform:

    • Musashi becomes an Oni — a demonic warrior form

    • Hyper-armor on all attacks (can't be interrupted)

    • 2x damage on all attacks

    • Unique Oni-form moveset with extended range

    • Health regeneration while transformed (10% of max HP over the duration)

    • Lasts ~20 seconds

    • Cooldown: ~90 seconds before you can transform again

    Ranged Combat

    Oni Bow

    • Hold L2 to aim, R2 to fire

    • Charged shots deal 3x damage and can stagger bosses

    • Limited arrows (carry capacity upgrades available)

    • Headshots on unarmored enemies are instant kills

    • Essential for certain puzzle and exploration segments

    Environmental Combat

The developers explicitly encourage "playing dirty." Use the environment:

    | Interaction | Effect | |-------------|--------| | Tatami Shield | Rip up floor mats as temporary shields (absorbs projectiles) | | Cart Push | Shove carts into enemies — knockdown + damage | | Balcony Drop | Knock enemies off ledges for instant kills | | Lantern Smash | Destroy hanging lanterns to set enemies on fire | | Door Slam | Kick doors open into enemies on the other side | | Barrel Roll | Roll explosive barrels down stairs into groups |

Environmental kills grant bonus souls — the devs want you to use them.

    Combat Flow Summary

The optimal combat loop in Onimusha: Way of the Sword:

    1. Open — Close distance, probe with quick one-handed attacks 2. Defend — Parry/deflect enemy responses to build posture damage 3. Punish — Counter during stagger windows. Switch to two-handed for max damage 4. Absorb — Pull souls during brief pauses (don't get greedy) 5. Escalate — Chain parries to Blaze. Spend Oni Gauge on Gifts or save for Transformation 6. Finish — Issen for style points. Environment kills for bonus souls. Oni Transformation to close out bosses.
